Italy’s Renewable Energy Communities breakthrough in 2024

It is not a bold statement to say that 2024 will be the year of Renewable Energy Communities in Italy. The introduction of Renewable Energy Communities into the Italian regulatory process dates back to "Milleproroghe" Decree 162/2019, (converted by Law No. 8/2020 of Feb. 28, 2020), which transposes the European RED II Directive (2018/2001/EU)..The current scenario outlined by by the new Renewable Energy Communities Decree, focuses mainly on two new measures.

di Raffaello Magaldi, Executive Vice President of Magaldi Green Energy Let's learn more about MGTES, the new thermal energy storage technology patented by Magaldi Green Energy, startup of Magaldi Power aimed to pilot innovations to support energy transition for flexibilization and decarbonization of industrial processes. Magaldi Green Thermal Energy Storage (MGTES) is a flexible, high temperature Thermal Energy Storage (TES) technology for short as well as Long Duration Energy Storage. The system uses electricity for the charging phase and subsequently release energy in the form of heat when needed. MGTES is designed to offer support to renewable energy systems such as wind and solar photovoltaics, representing a sort of energy dispenser “on demand”, accumulating green energy and releasing it when needed, avoiding intermittency.

In 2020, a period of great challenges for humanity began, characterized mainly by the Covid-19 pandemic that hit all the countries of the world hard, resulting today in 472,816,657 infections and 6,099,380 deaths globally (WHO, 2022), without distinguishing between industrialized or developing countries or between poor and rich people. The high number of cases translated into unsustainable pressure on health systems and a very high level of exhaustion for health operators. This notably sensitized the world about the importance of investing in infrastructure, modernization, training, and mostly enabling working conditions for the health sector.

Reduced Greenhouse-gas emissions and carbon dioxide emissions by 45% from 2010 levels by 2030 for global warming to be maintained at 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels; zero net emissions by mid-century; drastically cutting other greenhouse-gas (methane and nitrous oxide) and new decarbonisation goals by the end of 2022. And again: to accelerate the installation of renewable energy plants and to reduction of coal-fired power stations and subsidies to fossil fuels. These are the key points of the final 11-page document, called the Glasgow Climate Pact, signed by almost 200 countries, which mark the path to combat climate change for the coming decades.

The key role of heat to decarbonize the industrial system

Green Heat Storage is one of the key to fight climate change. Industrial heat constitutes for most of the industrial energy request and most of direct industrial CO2 emitted every year. One of the latest analyses on the subject goes back to the International Energy Agency's (IEA) World Energy Outlook 2017, which points out that industrial heat accounts for two-thirds of industrial energy demand and almost one-fifth of global energy consumption. And that as industrial heat demand continues to grow, so does its share of CO2 emissions, accounting for a quarter of global emissions by 2040.
